Using Speakers as Microphones

Has anyone else tried using a speaker as a mic? I read in a magazine that someone took and unused Yamaha NS-10 and put it on his kick drum and got some awesome sounding bass. I thought this was kinda cool, so I took an old car speaker out of the basement, soldered the appropriate connection on the end of it and put it in front of my kick. Great low end, had to put another mic on the kick just to get some of the attack, there's virtually nothing over 1 kHz. I didn't even need a mic preamp, just plugged it straight into the computer. Since there's no high frequencies, isolation was great-- easy to gate in the mix. Can't imagine using it on anything else tho, maybe a bass amp. Anyway, anyone else ever heard of this? It's pretty cool. Now I don't have to go spend a hundred bucks or more on a kick mic.

Kick drums

You mean you really can use this trick for ALL your kick drum sounds?

I doubt it...

ok maybe that last sentence in my last post was a bit uncalled for. I could have worded it more like "I can stall a little longer on spending a hundred bucks on a kick mic." So I'm a do-it-yourselfer who likes to find the least expensive methods for doing things...

Ns10 yamaha monitors

yes I 've heard of it being done quite a lot in the studios in Toronto Canada

The Ns10 yamaha monitors are quite popular and they use the 8" woofer to catch the bottom end. They are great for kickdrum and bass guitar amp.

Too bad Yamaha no longer manufactures The Ns 10 as we know them because of the pulp used in the speaker is no longer available.(1997)

Any speaker will work just be aware of the impedance match.I've known a few engineers fry the input gain on their boards trying this.

Alfio Annibalini

I forgot to mention in my last reply that it is also used in a doghouse recording of the amplifier(any amp)

we build a box which is insulated with a cover and actually put the amplifier in the so called dog house and mic it with an SM57 shure and the ns10 woofer

Recording engineer mixer Alfio Annibalini, who has worked with such renowned artists as Nelly Furtado, Our Lady Peace, and The Tea Party,
The studio’s reputation soon grew along with it’s clientele and Annibalini began working on projects for such artists as Nelly Furtado, DMX, Wave, I Mother Earth, Our Lady Peace, The Tea Party, Kardinall Offishall, Saukrates, Danko Jones, Lee Anne Rimes and Neko Case.

Annibalini currently works as a freelance recording engineer mixer working on various projects with production partner Andy Curran (SRO management), Mario Ciccone (Maverick Records), and teaches for Seneca College, and the Metalworks Institute.

I myself just came back from a seminar which he was presenting and this happened to be one of his tricks he used on the albums

8" woofer fitted inside a drum shell

Yamaha SKRM-100 SubKick
Sub-Bass Transducer for Kick Drums and Bass Instruments Mounted in 10" Drum Shell

This actually an 8" woofer fitted inside a drum shell

It actually looks like the yamaha monitor speaker(the speaker itself)

I just read an article about engineering Paul McCartney's bass on "Taxman" by using a speaker as a mic. Find it here:
