if patience is not a big part of your package then you may lose many battles that you may face in the recording room.

As Far As Importance Goes, Technical Knowledge Ranks At Number One.

You Wont Get Employed If You Dont Know What You're Doing.

Patience Is Important But It Isnt The Most Important Qualitay That You Need.

I would just like to state that i think that a Great Ear is more important than anything. You can be the most knowledgable techy in the world but if you have absolutely no ear for how music is mixed, then the product you complete will show it. I have seen some unbelievably trained engineers that when they finished a project it sounded like crap. Anyway, just thought that i would throw in my 2 cents worth.

I think perhaps experience should have been in the list, our ears deteriorate as we get older but for some reason my mixes are getting better

well, my initail answer to that was no, but as I began to type my deteriorating ears picked up the excitable chatter of some young students returning home from what must of been a good night out, while I've been sitting here scanning forums - I decided to change my response.

Coffee is sooo important....I would say in todays day & age, all of the above would be "almost" equally important....the fact there there are so many quality people out there with this severe addiction/love of music production that you need all those qualitys equally or someone 'round the corner's gonna take that dream job from you....that's probably the easy answer though.....

It's funny how nobody has clicked on "Know when to shut up" yet (ok so not many votes yet) ....

I just did.... the technical aspects are not as important - I can teach them that as long as they have a propensity for it.... but if I ever hear an apprentice ever say "At school they told us only dinosaurs wrap cable that way, with today's wires you just have to wrap 'em around your arm..." or something equally stupid, they'd be gone sooo fast!

IMO, having good ears and the ability for critical listening are the most important characteristics a budding AE needs to have.

abillity to make someone listen to you

You can have the best ears in the world and also have the abillity to come up with the best solutions for every problem you come allong.. you can be a creative mastermind and a walking manual on everything..
but if you dont have the social abillity to make someone listen to you, it will be very hard to get a job. even when you have a job, how are you going to make your self clear to an dominant producer.
I dont think a great ae excels in any of the points listed above, but will be a good mix of everything.
