Recording Engineer - Viable Career?

I'm just here to ask this question, should I even bother entering into a school like Full Sail for a degree specializing in Recording Engineering? I'm a musician to the core, and have been recording in ProTools for about 5 years now.

I just want to here from some professionals and semi-professionals alike. Is the professional recording industry declining as much as I understand it to be? Is such a career path even viable today?

What is the best approach? Developing your own personal studio?

And so on...
