uneven ears

I am a composer trying to learn how to mix my tracks well in my home studio. My main concern is that my right ear does not hear sounds above 13/14k anywhere near as well as my left ear does. Everything below sounds very even between the two ears. I am 27 so I suppose I am lucky to have very good hearing still in at least one of my ears. But should I dash my hopes of ever becoming good at mixing due to the unevenness of my ears? If there is still hope, does anyone have any tips on stereo mixing with such an impairment? how important are the highs these days anyways with all those mp3's out there being cut off at 16k?

I have a similar problem, but reversed.
I have around 70 percent hearing in my right ear and 50 in my left due to a telex accident (dont ask).

I would consider doing something like hearing therapy.
Perhaps wearing a earplug in your left ear to forcefully train your right.

Also, train yourself to be able to see what a good mix looks like within your software (without ridiculous peaks and spikes and such) and then borrow a friend with better hearing than you.

Before I put a mixed song on a cd I always have between 4 and 10 friends listen to it and give me constructive criticism, this seems to do the trick.

Good luck,
Aquila
