University, then a recording school
I am thinking of going to university to obtain a bachelor's degree in Business/Business Management, and then heading off to a recording school, possibly LARS. While my dream is to have a career in performing, I am interested in producing and working in the studio as well. I am wondering if a degree in Business will help at all in my situation. The way I see it is that a degree in Business comes in handy everywhere, especially when planning to enter the music industry. Any feedback is appreciated, I would like to hear your opinions.

If you have the opportunity of going to University I would support that idea. Unquestionably it is a good idea for many reasons, not least you will always have the degree in business which will stand you in good stead for a variety of careers, should music not work out for any reason. In addition business acumen is essential for a career in the music industry too. Mind you, not that everything should be monetised, creativity for its own sake is also good, but you’ll probably need to pay the bills at some point.
Hope that helps. _________________ Recording Studio Suntans

Thanks for the feedback, that does help reassure me I'm not making a bad decision here.
Now I am wondering whether or not it is necessary to go into a specific Music Business program that I see offered at some schools in the states, or will the education I recieve in a general business management/marketing program be sufficient when it comes to understanding the music industry?
I'm just concerned that there might be more to learn about the industry than can be offered in a general business marketing course.
On the other hand, I doubt the majority of the people working in the industry today have degrees in a specific music business program. From what I've heard, these kinds of programs haven't been around for that long. Once again, thanks for your input.

Ya know what, without looking at the specifics of the course you are considering I’m not in a position to go much further. Ok so if we speak generally about this you may find, “may”, that some courses are much more tailored to “the bizz” and the staff may be experienced in the area (essential), which would probably be a good thing. BUT on the other hand what if you do decided that music is not for you, what then? Will the music and relatedness be suitable for non music careers? _________________ Recording Studio Suntans

Very good point, but I've known all my life that music is the only thing I'll be happy doing, so the only way I'd choose a different career is if music simply did not work out at all for me. Then again, if i'm not successful in the whole "business" side of the industry, I do plan on going to a recording school after university. After all, I'd be much happier working in the studio or performing, and I do have a background in music as well as the recording process so I guess I'm doing the business thing just to have something to kind of fall back on. Heh, I'm beginning to go in circles trying to decide the best way to go. I guess the only way to find out is see the program is like, then I can (almost) always transfer if I feel it isn't what I need. I'm just hoping the transfer policies aren't too strict if it happens to come to this.
Thanks again for your help.
