I'm trying to set myself up a little studio and have a couple of questions regarding this. I haven't been able to find specific answers to my questions yet so was hoping you could all help?

I have a Mackie 1640 Onyx desk. It has 6 aux sends on each channel. Firstly, and probably most stupidly, am I right in thinking those are for headphone/monitoring? If those aren't, then how do I set up a headphone mix?!

Secondly, I want to set up a live and control room situation. I'm happy enough getting a live muiti-core snake but my main problem is how to send a headphone mix? I understand the need for a headphone amp etc but is there an easier solution to buying two different multicores or could i combine the two?

Final question...is there anything that could simplify this whole situation? Kinda feel I'm over complicating the problem!

You can use the pre-fader aux sends to create a mix independent of the big faders. Plug the aux sends for whichever aux channel you are using into the headphone amp.

I suggest using pre fader aux sends for this instead of the post fader, because when using post fader sends, the sends' output level is affected by the channel fader.

For future reference, aux sends can also be used for outboard effects. Run signal out through the aux sends, and back in via the aux returns.
