Advice for a cameraman about mics

Hello everyone,

I'm venturing into 'unchartered territory' in a few days and need some advice from sound professionals like yourselves. Because we aren't very hi-end we need a solution to a problem. Some of our scenes need to be recorderd without other's knowing-think hidden camera. So we need to get audio of what's going on to match the video!

I've done some research into voice recorders and have come to the conclusion that this will work. Attaching a lavalier mic to the recorder will work- i just need to know which one to buy. I need one that will give me very good sound quality so it doesnt sound like a telephone recording. Was looking at this one thats about $150 Australian dollars

Could you guys give me some guidlines when choosing a voice recorder- like what level of quality it has to record to be 'high quality' when adding it to video..

and yes, i will be using a clapper to sync it all up icon_wink.gif

You got a hot next door neighbor who likes to spend extra time in the shower?

If you want a truly hidden mike, look for a small wide range microphone, like one used for a choir. It will pick up almost any sound.

EDIT: For 'high quality voice', unfortunately a wide range microphone usually will not work, (unless you spend a few bucks) as it will pick up any background noise.

maybe try a Audio Technica ATR-55. Not very expensive. I own one, but don't get much opportunity to use it. From what little I've done with it, it seems ok, tho.
