There's nothing wrong w/ the mic or the preamp. What you're hearing is your "room" and the "room noise floor" in the microphone. That "echo" comes from the voice reflecting off the wall. To get rid of that you're going to have to "damp" the room by putting absorbant on the walls, placing gobos on the floor, or hanging absorbers from the cieling (blankets, etc).

The "hum" is probably low-frequency noise from your A/C or furnace air-handler. That's a common source of low-frequency "noise" in most acoustical environments... most studios will put the air-handlers on neoprene mounts to isolate them from the building structure/frame, etc.

That should get you started... adding furniture to the room (couches, overstuffed chairs, etc) will help to damp the noise. Hard, reflective, surfaces (tables, wooden chairs, plaster walls) etc. all reflect sound and they'll just contribute to the reflections.
