Latency problems
Hi guys!
I have a little problem that i hope doesn't mean spending money.
I was doing a recording of my friend, guitar and vocals yesterday. When we were doing the vox harmonies he noticed that there was a delay through the headphones so that when he opened his mouth to sing the line it took a small but off-putting delay till it came through to the headphones.
I have not used my equipment that much since getting my studio set up.
I am using Sonar 4, delta 1010 soundcard , yamaha mixer and the pc is a 2.8GB athlon processor with 512bit ram.
I have a similar problem with midi in that the delay from plaing a note in the audio instruments or just GM takes so long to sound that i cant use it. However it works fine in Reason. I have a M-audio radium49 keyboard.
I'm thinking that i might need more ram but it is not displayed at more than about 30-40%. I'm sure iv heard of delay compensation in sonar but i cant seem to find it in the help files and i don't want to guess and change something that was set right.
If someone can suggest something here i would be very grateful.

latency and buffering
Welcome to the world of digital recording. Latency is a huge issue. Gotta have mucho RAM and fast, clean hard drives.
I don't know exactly where to look for the latency compensation cause I don't use Sonar. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the setting would be something to do with delaying the playback while recording.
But one other thing you can do to help the latency is adjust your buffer size.
Ideally, you want to have the smallest(aka fastest) buffer possible. But if latency is a problem, you may need to go larger(aka slower).
BTW, why is this post in the Rules and Stuff topic?

It's my first post and i don't understand what I'm doing- I'm new to forums!
Cheers for that I've set it so I've got the most out of it without dropping out so we'll see what happens.
