I've been doing amateur computer recording for about a year...and I still have no Idea what the hell MIDI really is...everytime i try to get into it the loads of information just blows me away....what are the reall benefits of recording MIDI...are there any advantages to not recording MIDI...but really what the hell is it and it's purpose???

concept:
MIDI is like sheet music, but not the music itself. You can look at the notes and apply them to whatever instrument you are playing. It tells how a song goes, but it is not the song.

So, when you record MIDI, you are recording when a note is played, how long long to hold it, how loud or soft it should be, and tons of other info.

This makes editing super easy, but takes away from the realism (although midi can still sound pretty real).
