Probably an impedance issue.

How are you plugging you mic in to you PC, the line input and the mic input is not good.

You want a DI box really.

I have to make do with the 1/8" plugs for now until I get a new comp... but how would a DI box help..?

Impedance

It's nothing to do with the plug connection.

If it is what I think it "could" be, then a DI box will lower the impedance of the guitar, so that it is better matched to the input impedance of your sound card.

Guitars have very high output impedances, far to high for standard sound card inputs.
