hi,
My name is Devon and Im starting up a little home studio for my own group (an acoustic jazz trio) and any other similar groups that may want to record. i am looking into getting a mckie 1640 w/ firewire
under my belt as far as mics I have:
AT3035 AT4033SE (2)AT ATM33a (2)Shure BG 5.1 (4)AT snare/tom mics. and a kick drum mic to be bought soon.
Would just like some opinion about the mcakie 1640. Whether this will work well for some newbie studio recording. If you know of any better models or such in a similar price rang please let me know as well.
I would just like to get any feedback about this purchase as it would be a major investment. thanks for your time!

the onyx firewire series has some good kit - a firewire mixing desk is an excellent choice - watch the costing though because the firewire card is an accessory (additional cost) - alesis do similar products eg

same deal
i was just looking in to the same thing 1640 w fire wire because i wanted to us all 16 chanels recording but i heard there was a complication with it buypassing the board just kinda using it like a big direct box to the computer. and that it dosent work with pro tools, so i wanted to know if the program that it dose work with is comparable. but this is one of my top choices still for a new mixer i just want to do alittle more homework.

The Onyx will work with lots of different audio software.
The problem with protools is that it is not very flexible - most digidesign equipment only works with protools and protools mostly only works with digidesign stuff.........
Firewire interfaces such as the mackie onyx series, presonus' stuff and MOTU (and loads more) are in effect outboard soundcards. They do all the digital processing so your CPU doesn't have to... Your computer's soundcard does nothing.......
My guess is that the Onyx stuff will include Cubase LE which is really quite good and user friendly for an entry level piece of software..
IMO this would be a good choice.
