Wireless interference incident on TV

Please watch this clip from the last Republican Presidential debate hosted by MSNBC:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NlIMQ31EjY

As you can hear, there is a whisper prompting candidate Mitt Romney on how to answer specifically. MSNBC could not identify the source and confirmed that the whisper did not come from anyone on their staff nor from any of the other candidates on the stage. Their conclusion was that it had to be an open (or so-called 'hot") microphone from the audience.

Some info confirmed by MSNBC: The whisper feed was on the same channel as Romney's microphone. His microphone was considered to be malfunctioning after the debate.

Now my question is, how likely is it that a microphone feed in the audience gets mixed with a candidate their microphone feed?

Is it possible that he was wearing an wireless earpiece and that the (malfunctioning) microphone's receiver accidently also picked up that feed?
