Yamaha DJX & MIDI (PLEASE HELP!!)

Hi there, I am an extreme MIDI noob and I would like to be able to use my Yamaha DJX I (not II) with my computer and use some of the virtual synths that are available.

I have one of those MIDI cable things it has a serial port one end and Input & Output sockets the other end. I have tried connecting it to my computer via the joystick serial port bit and put the MIDI plugs into my keyboard but my recording software doesn't recognise that it is connected to it. This is really frustrating me as I really would like to sample the world of MIDI but am unable to at present. Can someone please help me out and give me some pointers on how to connect it correctly and set it up so I can play around with the VSTi's and things!

Thanks in advance

If you know the serial port is working, and the computer knows there is something attached to it, then the only thing left is to make your software find the keyboard.

Usually in the midi settings of your software there is a setting you can pick via a dropdown menu or otherwise. What program are you using? I can maybe help if I am familiar with it.

For example, in Reason you go to Edit menu ->Preferences-> Control Surfaces page, where you can either auto detect the midi device or point to it.
