looking to invest in a set of drum mics (...kick drum, tom-toms, overheads)
i checked into the AKG D112 and the Shure Beta 52 for the kick...and i'm still looking into tom/overhead mics.

any recommendations would be helpful, my budget isn't as large as i'd like it to be, but as for now im using a set of apex drum mics, and they are not doing the job for me...haha.

any help is helpful.

I'm in the same position you are with about the same budget. I've been looking at pairs of AKG c1000's, Rode M3, or Oktava Mk-012 for overheads. From what i've heard they seem to be the best in that price range. The AKG and Rode pairs pickup highend really nice for cymbals, while the Oktava are supposed to have a warmer thicker sound which would help if you want to pick up the toms with em too. For the snare I'm using a SM57 on top, maybe another one on the bottom. I'd go with the D112. Read this article:

yeah the C1000 vs. the Oktava M12 ...
i like the idea of interchangeable polar patterns with the m12, and it seems the warmth in the freq. response is ideal for acoustic instruments.
the AKG also has a selectable polar pattern but the main feature seems to be the battery life LED....which is quite useless to me, haha.

i'm having trouble deciding on a kick mic, the D112 seems just as promising as the beta 52... anyone have expirience using either of them ?

check the above link out...tells you a bit of the problems with the m12...as standalone or unmatched factory set mite give you troubles.

I was told that if you have a bigger kick drum (20" and up) and want a deeper sound go with the Beta 52, I was gonna buy a d112 but changed my mind at the last minute and just bought the 52 yesterday. But the D112 seems to be the standard kick mic for a lot of people. If you want to accentuate more of the mid range of your kick then maybe go with the D112. Anyone else know more about these two?
