I've just recently bout pro-tools, and I'm very eager to try out some mics, and educate myself about different mics and how they sound.

I'm looking for a real 80's sorta sound. What mikes would you suggest (especailly for the toms).

Also, what techniques would you suggest.... e.q.ing, placement, etc.

80's toms = SM 57's. But that's not what's gonna give you the "80's" sound. I assume you're talking about 80's butt rock, as opposed to 80's pop.

What you need to do is compress the snot out of the toms (8:1 or more, or better yet an 1176 style compressor that's smashed), increase their gain, drop a fat gate with a slow release on them, and send them through a big room reverb.

Since you haven't recorded yet, your gains/thresholds would be more than likely different than what I post (save the compression ratio, this is still accurate), but at least you've got a place to start.

As far as phasing/mic placement. Since you will be close miking all your drums, it's usually best to get them in phase with your overhead mics. There's posts on how to get your mics in phase on here.

If I'm thinking of the sound your talking about; you probably want to deaden the drums a bit. Try putting your wallet on the snare and hit you'll know what I mean, just experiment with stuff and then yeah try some compression and reverbs.
