Vocal Booth? My Cuboard?

Hello All,

I am currently recording vocals and a few of my friends have suggested making a vocal booth in my room as I have a walk - in wardrobe which I dont really use. If I was to give this a go is there anything I need to know with regards to having the mic next to a wall and other such stuff. I got some curtain to sick on the walls on the inside, will this help?

Sorry, I'm a bit stuck and dont have a clue how to set it up. - any one got any floor plans or photos of there own?

Cheers

Ellis UK

Yes, with walls next to you, unless you use sound absortion as suggested (foam etc) you will find that the sound bouncing off the walls mixes to add/cut certain freqencies depending on the distance (comb filtering) between the wall and the mic. That can ruin the vocal sound.

A benefit is that the sound, for a given mic/mic placement would be reproducable for re-takes. Also you will be able to learn the characteristics of your booth after a while (for example you might learn to always expect a small boost at 210Hz, while 140Hz might be missing). Also reduced room noise is good.

assuming you don't want to turn your cupboard into a mental asylum cell with lots of foam im sure a thick curtain would be fine as long as the room hasn't got lots of natural re verb anyway, professional techniques dont always have to apply to budget recording.

hey im thinking about setting up a small vocal/guitar and instrument booth for hiphop style vocals/ rock guitar and instruments every now and again/ death metal guitar riffs. mostly just for recording vocals over my beats.

its dimensions are 60cm wide, 1.26m long and 2.1m tall.

my plan is to build the floor of the cupboard out futher to were the computer is then build a frame around it maybe.

im going to first put a layer of rigid fiberglass then i was think a layer of masonite over that. the some acoustic panels and bass traps.

i dont know alot about mic placement, where i should put the acoustic panels ect ect.

i would appreicate any advice people can offer and some tips to set it up

i have included some pictures to give and idea of what im starting with.
