Mic pickup range

Hey all, this might be a dumb question, but can anyone tell me how I could make my mic pickup a wider area of noise? My girlfriends mic and mine are about in the same price range which isn't very high icon_smile.gif , but hers picks up the sound of a tv and practically anything in the room and sometimes even sounds from outside when she's got an open window icon_biggrin.gif. But my hardly picks up when I'm half a meter away...Thanks in advance.

new mic

You can't make it do anything, the microphone is what it is, if it is not sensitive enough, both in terms of levels and/or pickup pattern then it simply isn't.

Might be time to buy a new one.

yeah, buy a new mic, you cant change a microphones frequency response unless its a very expensive condenser microphone. and incase your wondering what a frequency response is:

frequency is like the pitch of the sound most mics pick up mid frequencies and the line would look like a curve, the flatter the curve the better the microphone because it picks up a more equal frequency range,

in simple term cheap mics have a bad frequency responses and decent mics have a flatter (better response)

what are you trying to record?

Well sometimes I just don't want to use my headset all the time and want to have the mic away from me let's say about half a meter. It basically is the voice recording and surroundings and just don't worry about being to the mic close enough to pick up my voice
