Bass Guitar & Drums balance
I will be in the process of mixing my CD in a week or two. I play progressive rock/metal.
Any tips and tricks about processing bass guitar and drums?
Bass guitar and bass drum are very close in frequency range, so that makes it kind of difficult to achieve a perfect balance in the mix.
I am trying to get a bass drum sound ala: Mike Portnoy(Dream Theater), Lars Urlich(Metallica), or Vinie Paul(Pantera). I like that percussive nature of their tone. One other aspect of that tone is that you can perfectly hear double bass action through all the instruments in the mix. I am guessing it's a combination of EQ and compression. Any tips?
Thank you.

A good tip is to not forget about the higher frequencies the bass guitar and kick drum can produce. Look for some attack on the kick in the 900-3k range. And sometimes you can get an edgy sound on the bass with some low-mids mixed in. Also, what I like to do is find a really low frequency (40-80hz) on each of those instruments to boost by 15-20 db with a narrow bandwidth (Q) and run it through a soft guitar distortion pedal/amp/effect.

i find that rolling a HPF off sub harmonics ( at about 20Hz ) diminishes the unwanted muddy-ness of a kick, while boosting around 90-100 Hz will give you a nice thumping tone.
as said before, don't disregard the higher attacking tones of low end instruments.
