Music Theory

To what extent is traditional music theory necessary to become a recording engineer - knowledge of chord progressions, harmonics, various musical techniques, etc. (in particular, if you wanna do your own music)? I have heard widely verying answers.

The thing is the term "recording engineer" can be applied to many differeing areas of work. The traditional recording engineer is a rare beast these days in that many engineers are having to take work in various avenues, including creating the compositions themseves, such as radio jingles, ads etc.. in that environment I would say music theory is a BIG asset to have...

Of course many engineers do exist, and are very successful without that ability also.

Why do you ask, are you a musician?
