I have been looking at different plugin software and I see a bunch of letters next to them such as...

RTAS
AS
TDM
AU
VST
DirX
MAS
HTDM
DXi

What do these mean......

They're just plugin standards.

AS, RTAS, TDM, HTDM work for Protools systems

VST (Virtual Studio Technology). Developed by Steinberg, used across many platforms.

DirX and DXi are Direct X plugins for Windows based machines

AU= Audio Units. Plugins for Mac

Thank you very much, that was a nice simple answer and it was the type of response I was hoping for.

you're very welcome. probably it's not that you didn't think to google or were lazy about it, but sometimes searching the internet can make a simple thing like that seem overwhelming. been there. obviously, you found this forum.

I tried doing searches on them but it was time consuming figuring out one thing at a time with more detail than I needed. I was just looking for a simple answer, with every thing summed up, just like you gave me.

my first post. hope it's a good one . . .

the whole plugin thing's getting a little nasty with cross format adaptations (or not) however I have come across a little number that makes VST/AU compatibility far less of an issue and it's also a whiz to use. Vst To AU Adaptor V2.0. http://www.fxpansion.com/index.php?page=5 nope, I don't work for them.

on the topic of the google thing . . . google's great, no doubt about it but as uncle_jerr has pointed it out; one googling can lead to a long, distracting and sometimes frustrating hour/day of searching, especially when you're really not certain of what you're actually searching for. [where was google when I was looking for that line hum the other day?]

somethings are better left to very nice message board friends. you usually get an answer back pretty fast, and many times you get a few answers just bcz . . . nice people tend to wanna help, and are opinionated f*ēks. hehehe however, there are an increasing amount of people using message boards who just love to state the obvious with snickering replies like :click, click . . . there you go"

can't we all just help one another? I mean, this is what message boards are for and it's much more enjoyable to meet fellow members and share our problems rather than google them all the time.

anyway, just another HO.

thanks for letting me talk. hope to be around here a lot!
