I am a very good (digital) mixer (not such a good speller) as i have developed my (digital) mixing technic over years and with some clever creative input...

but I have always had a problem with my mix after master sounding harsh at higher levels...

But I have just read a post by Wilkes (I think) which may have shed some light onto the subject....

I'd just like to say Wilkes you are the man!

I do use the L2 at master stage but i never effect the master out at mix.
my mix never sounds squashed (anymore) but i have had that niggling harshness problem.

So you say a whole -3 db ???? gee i can't wait to try this.

I never master to monitors i always burn to disc and try it on many hi-fi systems.

I'll get back to you Wilkes if you have solved my problem as the harshness is probably the digital DA distortion from clipping.

If this (or a variant of this theory) fixes the problems i am having ... i am very disappointed at the digital software that is indicating that 0 dB is somewhere when it is actually ... at another place in the space time continuum...

here i was thinking that the information that i was being given was correct.

But then again i suppose that works for a lot of things come year 2007.

This output information discrepancy has caused me a lot of problems (and time lost) this information should be spread far and wide for up and coming Artists/ engineers.

What I have found -

I pull the master to -3db and the sound appeared to increase....??

no it'a all about the complicated way i mix and master

The best results i have found so far and yet: was pulling the L2 -3.0db

and using a Multi band compressor ... but i don't recommend it unless you have done other vital things to compensate for a perceived loss of higher end EQ.

But by not increasing the EQ.

theBlackBay, try setting the master to -4, and flat-line the EQ (just for grins) and tell me what you hear.... (I do have reason for this request, so just humor me for now)

I don’t EQ in the master stage really anymore well ... in fact my new theory is not at all except for a cut at the bottom. I’ll go back to the mix.

are you counting the L2 a well loved and hated machine in this scene?

because i can pull the Master -4db or the L2 -4db, the L2 flat limits the signal also i'll try both ok.

I can say i have improved my technic by the use of a multiband compressor so results have improved i was also told by a UK engineer about an analogue Transformer (believe it or not) that can supply a type of magnetic compression .. basically just like running the master through tape but without the loss of signal to noise.
