If your limited on nice microphones try this technique. Only involves two overheads and still picks up quite a nice sound. Two nice condensers and away you go! After a long talk with AC yesterday, I tried this technique and added a snare and kick mic for emphasis and it worked really well. I was running CAD Pro 7 condensers and kick mic as well as an SM57 on the snare and I got quite a nice sound. So if you have 2 nice condensers (unlike me) you can run this setup and it should pick up nicely. _________________ Bob Seifert, SEIT

I use about 17 mics. 2 kicks, 2 snare (snare top/snare bottom), 2 hihats, 1 ride, 3 toms, 1 floor tom, 4 octobans, and 2 overheads. It is a pain, but I like the end result.

2 AT pro37's for overhead (cymbals)
1 Audix r12 for kick
3 Audix r8;s for Toms (left),Snare (center) and hi-hat (right)
Sometimes a single AKG414 about 4 feet above the entire kit for overall sound.

2 CAD overhead's, Audix i5 on the snare top, CAD snare on bottom, SM57 on the high tom, another i5 on the low tom, Senn e605 in the kick about 2" away from beater and a CAD kick mic on the outside about 1/2" from the resonant head. _________________ Bob Seifert, SEIT

Last time I recorded a kit I used:
Kick - Shure Beta 52 and Beta 91 inside and a Shure KSM 32 outside
Snare - AKG C414 TL IIs top and bottom
Toms - AKG C 414 BULSs on the rack and floor
Hats - Oktava MC 012
Ride - Oktava MC 012
OHs - Shure KSM 137s in XY
Room - Neumann M147 and U87 in MS
Was a great open sound but I found that the 414s collected a lot of spill.

contemp. jazz....(nice sounding in a wide room with little diffusion and reflections.
Kick: AGK D112/Beta 52
Snr: sm57 top/bottom
Overheads: AKG 414 paired or spaced, panned L/R to comfort.
gives a very traditional sounding kit, quite happy for the little amount of mics used.
