What kind of mic?

hey guys

got some stupid (i guess) questions and i am sure some of you know the answer straight away...

i am in a band and i am making my own home studio at the moment. But there's something i don't understand. When you see bands live the singer of the band almost eats the microphone, it's like he or she is "licking" the microphone. Well, when i do that at the rehearsel the only thing i hear is a dull sound and i am absolutely not understandable. When I move a couple of inches away from the mic it's getting better but then i have to scream or i sound like singing in a bathroom. It's driving me mad, because i know i really can sing and have the right singing technique (had many lessons with one of the best know singing coaches in belgium and everything works fine when singin with him. Now, i am wondering what mic i should use or what else is going wrong. I have a ging in two and a half months and i don't wanne go live unless i know how i sound together with the band, now it sounds awfull.
You got some tips for me? I've been looking around the net to find some more information but it's all too technical for me.
Thanx in advance

Shure SM58 or a Beyer M69..... you need to use them with a proper PA that has enough power to clearly raise the vocal volume level above the rest of the band.

sm57?

I dunno... I actually prefer 57s for live singing. I'm just weird like that, I guess. But I've used Beta 58s, SM58s, various AT mics, and I always come back to the SM57s. But I'm getting some sort of vintage mic from the early sixties from a relative soon, so that might take over, just for the cool factor.

The SM57 and the 58 use exactly the same capsule....

::shrug::

Like I've said in other threads, I don't know much about anything. I just like the 57s.

Well then I guess you now know one more thing... that the 57 and the 58 share the same capsule....

That means you're that much further away from being a novice....

Hey Firque,
No stupid questions.
So are you recording yourself singing or listening to yourself live?
What kind of mic are you using now?
Do you stay the same distance from the mic the whole time you sing, or do you get closer for the soft parts and further for the louder?

This can depend on the volume of the singer's voice, the PA system, the pre-amp, the microphone itself, etc. If you sound better the way you do it, and nobody else can explain why-this-why-that, then why bother? Do it the best way you can and the way you like, and that's all that matters.

eating a mic tends to compress the signal. i suggest staying a little farther away and throwing some compression on. see what happens.
