how to: basic connection of a mixer to a CPU
heya. im a fresh member here : )
i have a Yamaha MG16/6FX basic mixing console and i was just wondering what connectors and which ports to connect to and from my CPU.
the catch is that i have no individual sound module. all i have got is the in-built sound card which is in the CPU (ports: microphone, speakers and an extra port im not sure what for).
my budget is extremely tight, which explains the absence of a proper sound card.
i kinda bought the mixer 2nd hand which means no manual, although i could order it, it would take some time.
i intend to use Adobe Audition or Logic as my software for my recordings.
My question being is whether it is possible to use the in-built PC soundcard to connect to the mixer, and to which inputs on the mixer do i connect from the back of the CPU.

in the beginning
Everyone starts somewhere. For now with that sound card, you can just run the main outputs (or group outputs from your busses) to that third port on your card-- it should be a stereo line-in port.
You can probably download the manual from the manufacturer's website.

The way that we used to do it before getting our ProTools setup is that we would use a stereo phone out to an 1/8" cable into the microphone plug of the PC. That worked for us, maybe worth a shot. Drawback: Can't truly multi-track. But it may be a place to start.
Happy tracking! _________________ Bob Seifert, SEIT

quick trip to radio shack
The mixing console probably has two independent 1/4 inch TS jacks for left/right channels. You'll need an adapter cable to get from that down to an 1/8 inch TRS miniplug to go to the line-in jack on your soundcard. That will give you a stereo input.
