effects send/return inserts

Hi everyone, this is my first post so forgive me if anything seems out of place here. but my question is regarding my mixer i use a basic peavy 8 channel mixer with no internal effects it cost about 150$. under every mic and line jack is an insert jack what exactly are these for?I know for effects but can i plug any basic ditortion/delay etc. pedal effect into this and if so how do i do this.also what are the effect send and return jacks for and what type of alternate equiptment do i need to utilize these jacks or do they also work with any run of the mill effects pedal.also how are these things connected cable wise. Thanks

hi, second post and i get to answer something woohoo lol...
So anyway the insert jack uses a TRS jack.. or 'stereo' jack to send signal to fx and return to desk in 1 jack.. you need a cable with a TRS jack on one end that splits in to 2 TS 'mono' jacks on the other end.. one of the mono jacks is send the other is return.. you will have to plug it in and try it to work out witch is witch!

ok, that's probably explained elsewhere, but since you asked it here, i'll answer you too. the inserts are used to patch compressors or eq's or any such processors. the signal basically leaves the path at the insert send point and goes to the compressor in (for this example), and then, from the comp out, comes back into the chain thru the insert return point. usually, you'll want to connect fx from the aux sends/return, so that you can control the wetness (the amount of fx into the signal) with the aux knobs. you can also use your auxes for headphone amps, etc or even as extra outputs if needed.

for the inserts, you need what they call Y cables, which has a TRS (tip-ring-sleeve) jack on one end (you could also call it stereo), and 2 TS (tip-sleeve) jack on the other end (you would call these ends mono). these are made so that the TRS end is split into a "tip" and "ring" on the other end.

the auxes use your regular TS or TRS cables (see the specs of the fx used for which you need).

hope that helped a little

Research and study as much as you can on console signal flow.
