MIDI and sound!
M.I.D.I. stands for M.usical I.nstrument D.igital I.nterface...
Partly, what that means is that midi is a message system for digital instruments (such as keyboards), which sends messages to a sequencer (for a musical composition situations), which in turn play plugin instruments or a sound device output, the way the note inputs were played.
MIDI on its own will not create a sound. make sure you get this right, and never forget it.
you could look at MIDI as the messages that go from your brain to your vocal chords, to tell them how to vibrate and create a speech.
there's more that should be said and understood about MIDI, but that's where books come in handy; unless someone else wants to elaborate
