The best mic for sound effects is...

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for one of the best mics to record sound effects with. Specifically, I'll be recording quiet sounds produced by some electronics (like the whine of a hard drive or the hum of a small computer fan). The setting will be a quiet (as quiet as I can make it) room. The mic will be shocked-mounted on a boom stand.

I've been eyeing a few mics by T.H.E. over at www.theaudio.com (namely the KP-6M & TT-3M References series, or the CR-6 Unibody series). I'd spend up to $500 but of course, lower costs are NEVER a bad thing icon_smile.gif

The mic will go into a PreSonus Tubepre preamp and then into the M-audio Firewire Solo interface.

ANY recommendations are welcome!! Thanks!

Wow the MKH Series is pricey. Too rich for my blood. Perhaps the K6 series might suit?

I had originally planned on choosing an omnidirectional mic, but the more I think about it, I think a directional mic may be best. I dont want to capture the room sound, I just solely want the sound of the device i'm trying to record.

Any other suggestions or thoughts anyone?

Don't shotgun mics have to be placed further away to be effective? I mean I can mic the equipment making noise from inches away. Is a shot gun mic really necessary here? And again, that's more than twice the amount I want to spend.

Am I making a bigger deal out of this than I should? I think i've nearly decided on getting the Sennheiser ME 66 short gun mic (w/ the K6-P power module). Anyone see any big problems with this?

Thanks for all your input. I just want to make the best decision I can, ya know?
