You can store Midi data files on CD... but Miid itself is NOT audio, it's data. Midi is nothing more than a series of instructions that is sent/recevied by midi-enabled devices.
Sometimes those instructions are what notes to play, for how long, by which patch.... other times, they're control instructions to control device parameters.
You use s/w to trigger sounds when you have midi note data. It's the sounds you trigger that are audio, not the midi data itself.... _________________ Bruce Valeriani - Mix Engineer
