Creative Use of Effects

As part of my BA (Hons) - Recording Arts, I am researching the use of external effects processors during mixdown.

I am interested to hear how you make use of effects in the mix, what your aims are, and whether you use automation (MIDI based probably)?

This is only for those using external effects processors - my study does not include the use of plug-ins.

Any information you are willing to give will be gratefully received.
Thanks in advance.

During mixdown - all my effects are outboard... my main unit is a Kurzweil KSP-8 (4 stereo effects via digital connection), along with 7 other various multi-effect units routed from the console via analog.

I use full automation from the console (Sony DMXR100) to determine effect levels at various stages of a mix.....
