I like my Phonic Helix 18 Firewire mixer. It cost me about $459 and I use it as the front end for my laptop based home studio. There is a smaller version with 12 inputs that costs $299 and is all you need to get started.
Will it works with this Old Computer? And should I buy for this an extern SoundCard?

Attention everyone: DO NOT BUY THE PHONIC it is a piece of garbage. This douche has been spamming and peddling this since day 1, and will not get the point that the phonic is a very low end overpriced piece of crap.
shttrks, This guy was asking if his comp is good enough, and yes it is. Why do you keep peddling this shit, especially when it has nothing to do with the question at hand.
As far as programs, check out Cubase, Protools, and Sonar, those are the top 3. I prefer cubase
Have you tried the Phonic Board?????? With what computer platform and type?????? What software did you use?????
I've had the Helix 18 firewire for several months now and have had no problems with it. I've been running my own studio for some 20 years now and go all the way back to the old Teac Reel to Reel days, and have tried lots of computers and equipment. I use the Helix board with both a desktop P4 running Windows XP and Sonar 2.2 and Adobe Audition 1.5. Also use Sony Sound Forge 8.0b on a daily basis. I also switch it over to a Toshiba P45-S265 notebook machine running the same software. Loaded the board up out of the box with the driver disc that came with it and have had no problems. Have recorded up to 16 tracks at one time with it.
So what Have you tried it with and what was your bad experience?????
I like the fact that I can use it as a both a PA mixer with an amp and speaker system or for recording with my PC's.
As I said.....I've had my own studio making custom orchestration background tracks as well as doing my own songwriting and recording since the 70's. You have to try things with an open mind and then grow with them.

Yes, I tried a couple different ones out in a couple venues. They are crap. If you do a search for my previous posts you can see why.
It might suffice for live sound, but not for recording. If you have been recording for 20 years, and are not deaf yet, then you can hear why the board is not worthy.
