Hello and Question.

Ok I've made some posts so i thought i might as well introduce myself and ask a question too.

I work as a live sound person with minimal studio experience i've been building a home studio bit by bit over time and i'm really into the idea of getting out of live stuff and into studio stuff... The two worlds seem quite different and i know although my live is experience is very useful there are a lot of gaps when it comes to understanding software, processes and working methods. but yah i want to do this so i was thinking maybe if i studied further (most of my knowlegde and experience of sound is practical) that would help me... between now and then look for another way into that world too (of course it's better to earn and learn if you have the luxury) but yah does anybody have any tips for me?

Welcome.

You are correct on all those points, studio recording is a million miles away from live engineering, I've done both.

Studio work is all about patience and repetition, something that live sound does not have the luxury of, also the techniques for microphone placement can be very different, again you have much more time to "craft" the sound by placement experimentation.

As far as tips go, I'd get into learning about signal paths in the studio, both analouge and digital theory, and then also reflect on studio psychology.

Hope that helps.

p.s. you can be the most knowledgable geeky person in the world but if you are not good with people, you'll fail in the studio .. interpersonal skills are vital!

Re: Starters

Yah thanks for the tips... There are so many courses with different sillabus' it's unreal... I wanted to steer away from the pro audio schools because i have sneaking suspicions that they seduce you with gear take your money and then consentrate a lot more on the creative aspects of sound... But yah I'm looking at really trying to understand loudspeaker design, microphone design and placement as well as software, hardware and general audio electronics but yah i also don;t want to bite off more than i can chew either!

I so agree with that it's unreal, I think it's the same with live, you get a lot of guys shouting at everyone and being grumpy it doesn't do anyone any favours.
