Before ANYTHING else, you need recording skills........... if you haven't done so already, I suggest you pick up Huber & Runstein's "Modern Recording Techniques"....
The most important part of recording is what goes on BEFORE you hit the RECORD button. Gear and plug-ins don't give you good sound - engineering skills do. _________________ Bruce Valeriani - Mix Engineer

depending also on what type of music yer recording. I'm an acoustic/rock fella' and i didnt like the drum sequences for what i need. so i bought a yamaha PSR 293 keyboard midi and i use it to record my drum tracks. i lay down the rythmn and bass, and then use keyboard to manually play along drums on another track...and here's the best part. i use cubase for all my editing/recording/mixing...dvd quality and it's so much easier than poop loops. so basically all i own is...a computer, soundblaster(for play back only) and i use Edirol audio interface for recording usb, and cubase for recording/mixing/editing. and i use a breedlove master series guitar and yairi guitar and in fact i stopped using my old bass, i just use the keyboard to make bass sounds now. and since i re-recorded my old stuff from a brutal analog studio where i live, i think the sound is ten times better. and it showed since i got a 4 song contract with stony plain records good luck!
PS: i dont even use studio monitors, i just use sony rca speaker system. works good for me. and good headphones....gotta have those....mercy....
