what type of interface
what kind of inputs and how many you think you need?
otherwise this list is pretty endless.
Look at some M-Audio, Tascam, Edirol, Echo, and E-Mu products.
Lots of devices in that price range give you 8 analog I/Os
plus MIDI and S/PDIF. Some Have fewer inputs, but include mic preamps.
Tell us what you're lookin for

yo
so you just need basically one mic input right now?
I would suggest buying a box and a couple sm57's to get started.

Check out the Phonic Helix 18 Firewire mixer. It has 18 total inputs, 8 mic pre's, digital effects, ships with Cubase LE and has tons of aux sends / routing options for around $459. Real faders and 3 band EQ with KNOBS!!! Beats mousing around any time. Connect it to an iBook or PC laptop via Firewire and you have a powerful, portable system for less than $2k.
I picked one up at Ash & I'm loving it.

It depends on how serious you want to get. For basic recording, the entry level Apple iBook works fine. If you want to do more than 12 - 16 tracks and want to use plug-ins for reverbs and other signal processing, etc, you're probably going to run out of processing power or have speed issues. In this case you'd probably want to move up to a more expensive Titanium iBook
In the PC world, any Pentium 4 laptop will work fine. A Dell 5150 can be had for a decent price. Again if you want to do lots of tracks with lots of plug-ins, you're going to want a faster, more expensive machine.
Good luck

I like my Phonic Helix 18 Firewire mixer. It cost me about $459 and I use it as the front end for my laptop based home studio. There is a smaller version with 12 inputs that costs $299 and is all you need to get started.

Attention everyone: DO NOT BUY THE PHONIC it is a piece of garbage. This douche has been spamming and peddling this since day 1, and will not get the point that the phonic is a very low end overpriced piece of crap.
shttrks, This guy was asking if his comp is good enough, and yes it is. Why do you keep peddling this shit, especially when it has nothing to do with the question at hand.
As far as programs, check out Cubase, Protools, and Sonar, those are the top 3. I prefer cubase
