Equipment:
Logic Audio 5.10 on Windows XP
M-Audio 1X1 Midi interface
Roland VSR-880 (Rack mounted version)
Midi hookup: Interface OUT to Roland IN, Roland OUT to Interface IN

I'm having a problem getting Logic 5.10 to sync up with my Roland VSR-880, MIDI linkup is ok, but I think its the settings in Logic or Roland (or both) that are incorrect. Have enabled Sysex RX and Tx in the VSR-880, also selected VS-880 in Logic and done all the other settings as expressed in Logic Help screens, MIDI lights flash on Roland when Logic tries to acquire it, then Logic flashes up a message: "unable to detect Roland VS-880"

I am using a VSR-880 with Logic 5.51 on PC. I use it in 2 modes:

1. 8 In/Out audio interface directly to my PC. In this mode logic is the master and the VSR-880 is slaved to it. I am using the RBUS cable to transfer audio both ways. I use the RBUS as the master clock for the VSR-880.

2. I take the VSR-880 on site for 8 track HD recording. I then transfer the files into the PC when I get back.

I have found both work very well.

It sounds like you are trying to use the VSR-880 slaved to logic via midi with all the audion happening on the VSR-880. Is this correct?

Yes I am recording 8 tracks of live drums on the 880, then I want to record (track by track) all the vocals, bass etc into the PC thru my standard sound card in Logic Audio. But I cannot seem to get the Logic program to recognise the 880 via midi, and you seem to be saying that my 880 OS version may be old so - I will look into updating it. Do I also need to get the version of Logic that you are running ?

Also I am intrigued by your R-BUS setup, it could be a viable alternative for me (although I confess I dont fully understand it), currently my R-BUS is lying idle, what PC hardware do I need to allow the setup you are using ?

Yo guys.
I do the whole recording through the PC thing.. Except My methods stand a little different than yours.
I use SoundForge 7.0 to record.. and set the recording quality at 96kbps/24bit. (Sounds great even through the low quality mic I use - not even intended for recording.)
I import the files (usually full tracks) into Fruity Loops Studio Pro 4.5.1. and do all my effects tracks, EQing, and stereophonic mastering there. (Works remarkably well)
As soon as I can afford to get my hands on a 16 track digi mixer.. I'll just run the mixer into Soundforge as well (oh my.. I love this program - Just gotta know how to really use it) I should achieve some delightful quality through that... Micing the drums should be a pretty peice tho, If I want quality.... Seeing as I would have to use 2 boomed condenser mics, mic per tom, snare, hi-hat and kick-mic. With my set thats 10 mics. Wowee.. 'least I'll get some rad quality.

Easier way? any suggestions?

hmmm cant comment on the software as I'm just a rookie, but I'm a drummer and I'm recording live drums with these mics, they are cheap and really good, hope this helps a bit...

sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I have tried using the VSR-880 vis midi control and didn't have a lot of success. Also, Logic has much better facilities for arranging and the DSP effects make it a better choice for processing and mixdown.

So I purchased a Roland RPC-1 RBUS card (made by M-Audio). There is also the Delta RBUS card by MAudio which includes a pro-quality stereo interface as well as the RBUS link.

The process I use is a little tedious. The VSR-880 is great for going and getting live material. I then pbring it back and transfer all the audio into Logic over the RBUS. This is a real time transfer so it is usually find somethign else to do while it happens. But all tracks can be transferred together.

I didn't have a lot of success ig getting the VSR-880 to slave via midi. I did have more success at gettign the VSR-880 to be the master and for Logic to sync to it. But the arrangement I now use works better as I have complete control once all the tracks are in Logic.

Yes I have exactly that problem, I can get the VSR to drive Logic, but not the other way around. So I would like to get a Delta RBUS card and do it the same way that you are. Then as you say - its all in Logic and therefore much easier.

However I am not having any luck finding one of those cards. If you know of anyplace I can get one, or anybody wanting to sell one second-hand, could you let me know please ?

I've recently migrated from a Roland VM3100Pro --> Delta RBUS --> PC setup to the Tascam firewire interface, with plans to sell the Delta RBUS card.

It's still too soon for me to "cut the cord" on the old system though, so to speak, I'm still weighing the benefits of both, but the card will probably be available in a couple of weeks if you're still interested.

It worked with both the Roland mixer and with my VSR-880 as well. I have the original packaging/manual/latest drivers for it (and a cable)
