Multichannel Mastering
Who is doing this, apart from myself?
More importantly, what tools & techniques are being used?
Please, if you are into multichannel, join in this thread. It could be very good & informative. _________________ www.opusproductions.com

How did you do the mix?
What format did you export the mix in?
To get a multichannel mix, you first have to do the actual mix in Surround, and then you need to export in a format that is supported for the media you wish to use.
For example:
DVD-Video, perhaps the commonest format at the moment, uses either Dolby Digital, or AC3 as it's main multichannel format, or else DTS as an optional one. Both these are discrete formats and would produce the effect you describe.
There is also ProLogic, or LCRS encoding which is a matrixed format and does not give such good separation. But it does do the job at an entry level.
With DPLII you can even play a stereo disc in your home theatre system that is encoded in stereo and it will give you a form of surround - although not to the extent you want.
Moving on, there is also DVD-Audio. This uses uncompressed multichannel PCM WAV or AIFF audio. Downside is that it is much more specialized in both authoring and playback.
Lastly, there is surround CD, which can be done using either DTS or Dolby Digital. Again, it requires the mix to be done in Surround originally, and requires specialist encoders. But it does let you burn a surround mix to an ordinary CD with an ordinary CD-Audio creation program. It requires the player to be hooked up digitally to either a DTS decoder or a Dolby Digital one though. _________________ www.opusproductions.com

Sorry, I don't use either one.
However, if you post here, then everyone else can also see what the answers are too. _________________ www.opusproductions.com

Wilkes how is this going for you these days?
I'm about to start planning a 5.1 studio and may well use the fourm here as the forum for discussion. _________________ Recording Studio Suntans
