Dead Career???

Hey i am on the path/planning to become a recording engineer and i keep hearing how hard it is to make a living at it. is it because studios are so easy to make now with all the home studio stuff for sale. i think home studios dont sound half as good as an actual studio. (but thats me i have heard different) i just dont understand why people say "now a days anyone can make a studio for just under a few grand because i dont think they compare. just looking for some reasons why this is such a hard career to pursue. any answers would be awsome.
