Please... opinions??

Hi guys, i've been thinking on this with one new work and i need opinons cos' i'm new in mastering, but really i've get to mastering an album...

In one Audio track from Pro Tools insert an L2 Ultramaximizer from waves just to contain the track and prevent that no clipping there, then pass thru an apogee converter and a pair of Manley VOX VOX, then recording again into Pro Tools passing again to the apogee and later compress it more with the L2.

Is it valid????

Usually an L2 (and limiting in general) is last in the chain.

As a general rule and oversimplified "rule of thumb" a typical chain is:

EQ->compressor->limiter->dither

The Manley Vox Box looks interesting, but it's primary application isn't for mastering. It's a mono unit so you would need two of them and would have to link them together for stereo. At a retail price of $8,000 US I think that there would be better choices that are dedicated to mastering applications. Personally for this price range I would be looking at a dedicated EQ and compressor (Manley, Crane Song, Chandler, etc.).

The other issue (main one really) is your monitoring. What type of speakers do you plan to use and how are the acoustics in the room that you are using for mastering? If you can't hear in your room accurately, mastering can be a very painful process of burning a CD, listening on several different systems, and coming back for fixes.
