Super MIDI noob here, I'd like to use a laptop for gigging..

Hey guys! I hope someone can help me out here!

Here's what I have:

A Korg N264 keyboard (it has midi in/thru/out ports)
A Dell laptop with pretty good speed/memory (2.x Ghz, 1 GB ram)
A Crate KX-100 keyboard amp

Here's what I need to achieve:

Able to have specific patches able to be played at various times in my performances... I need a half-step down Piano, half-step down Strings, and some other noises. I can edit these patches on my N264, but they won't save.

Would I have more freedom in creating/using patches through my laptop as opposed to trying to arm wrestle my N264?

If anyone's used an N264 before, when I try to save it simply flashes 'Memory Protect' at me. I can't find anything in the manuals that says anything about a Memory Protect mode. Argh!
