 Sustain problem, help

hi

i am new with midi, I have an edirol pcr m50 connecting it to my PC using Sonar as a sequencer. I tried to adjust the Legato effect (Potramento time) but it did not work, guitar sounds are horrible. Also I attached a damper pedal, is it an on/off function only, can't i get a damper (sustain) effect value between 1 and 127........thanks
