Is there an adapter that would make it so I can plug my MXL 990 right into the USB 2 port on the MAC.

So, it would be ---

From Mic to Phantom power
then from phantom power to computer

the xlr from the phantom to the MAC has, of course, the USB adapter.

Is there such a thing?

And would it work?

Thank you for your previous help...on the subject of the aditional equipment I would need to get started. However the gentleman who offered the advice said to get the Euro track 502 which I ordered promptly, but the company sent me the wrong one for the cheaper price. they sent me Eurotrack 802 instead. I almost returned it, but then realized after reading a description of a 502 in the catalog, that the 502 has no phantom power. I then called them and let them know of the error, and my predicament, and they were nice enough to let me keep the 802 at the 502 cost to make up for their mistake.

No they do not exist as far as I know.

However, the same thing can be achieved with a USB pre-amp

That's costly (but good), you can find less expensive options.

I agree with this fellow above me ^. A recording interface with an onboard pre-amp is your best bet. However, I wouldn't recommend buying one cheaper than what he suggested, It will only dissapoint you.
