recording low wattage amps

I've been reading a lot about using low wattage amps in the studio like the Epiphone Valve Junior for recording electric guitar. Has anyone used the 10 watt amp from Wal-mart? May sound dumb but hey it's a low watt amp just like the 6 watt Epiphone.

It seems like a low cost amp like this would serve the same purpose.

It costs about $60 and the Epiphone is about $150.00. It could work!

The 'first act' electric runs about $75, and a pocket 5 watt amp runs about $25. It could work! It might sound like a cat caught in a wine press, but it might just work!

Put it in the right room, right guitar, right mic, right player and it will sound awesome. Put it in the wrong room, wrong mic, wrong guitar, wrong player and it will sound awful.

Thing is it will be unique, a loud guitar amp has no connection with it sounding loud on a record.

Some awesome guitar sounds are done with low volume, and also with high volume.

Try it all dude.

You can get some pretty tasty sounds tracking these low watt POS's. Depends on what sound you want. I've seen guitarist tear up Speak and Spells and wire their guitars to the amp section. I've seen them wire their amp to the earpiece on an old telephone handset and stick a 58 right up to it. You can get some pretty interesting sounds if you experiment outside the box.

Or for less than $100 you can pick up a V-Amp or something. I haven't mic'd my 15-watt Kramer ever since. Great for home studio recording.
