So what is your set-up, care to shed some light for those of us thinking about taking the plunge?

Running Nuendo on a dual Xeon 3.06 system, with 2Gb DDR RAM
RME HDSP 9652 Audio, and RME 8 I/O 96 DS Converters.
Outputs go into a Midas Venice console, and from there into Yamaha MSP10 Biamped Active monitors.
The Midas also handles inputs in the rare times I overdub.
Media is DVD-Audio, DVD-Video or DVD-A/V hybrids.
Surround CD's using DTS-CD via the Nuendo DTS Encoder.
DVD-A encoding done with SurCode MLP.
It is such a huge difference - really hard to explain how different but in a very good way. _________________ www.opusproductions.com

Technique
So care to take us through how a typical mix may shape up?
I mean where are you starting, are you working to a script? Are you having to source all the sounds? _________________ Recording Studio Suntans

Can I write this as a separate document, and submit that instead of sitting here typing for an hour or two?? _________________ www.opusproductions.com

You got it.
It will take me a few days to do it, as I want to get it right.
Software I use is Nuendo 2.2, with a few addons that nobody doing Surround should be without.
I'll try to keep it as close to basic methods as possible.
What, exactly, would you like me to cover - and in how much detail? _________________ www.opusproductions.com

Gorgeous
Well sounds good, I guess we are looking at someone who does not current do surround but would like to...
So it's what we need, hardware/software wise, and then how we go about creating that gorgeous spaciousness...and I guess on to what format, and how..
That could be weeks!!!!!!!!!!
Should it be two or more?

I have always been interested in doing surround and any info you can contribute would help.
My problem is that I am using an M-Box with Pro Tools LE 6.4. There are surround plugin's but what do I use for output? I have read aome white papers and nothing I can find relates well when there are two TRS outputs to work with.
Understanding setup would be key along with surround techniques.
Thanks Wilkes for taking this on

Yep,
Doing Surround mixes with Nuendo 2.
Also use Reason with outputs to Surround Bus and Adobe Audition for laptop/live use.
It's a whole new ballgame... starting with calibrating the monitors.
I encode to DD, DTS, MLP DVD-A and WMA.

I'm about halfway there on this one - having to fit it in around work and deadlines is a pain. But paying the bills has to come first.
Glad to hear from another Nuendo 2 user also doing DVD-A - welcome to the club!
Where do I know your name from?? Very familiar! _________________ www.opusproductions.com

PS - Paying the bills is indeed a headache when revenue is not (as fast and large as) what one expected... but it will be.. it will be!

DVD-A is only just catching on.
It hasn't helped with Idiots like Sony doing their level best to sabotage it at every step of the way either. _________________ www.opusproductions.com

I would love to start surround mixing
I use cakewalk homestudio, though. Does anyone know of a plugin I can use with that?
I've got the outputs available on my terratec phase88, but I still need a speaker setup too. Also, space is a problem for me-- nowhere to put those speakers. I guess I'll need a dvd burner too...

Yeah there does seem to be a need for considerable invesment for this, which presumably also has upgrade implcations therefore on going costs.
When you mention plugin, you mean to in effect enable you to mix for the individual surround stems? _________________ Recording Studio Suntans
