Need Advice on Direct Recording
Hi guys.
I need some advice.
I want to record guitar through my 002 Rack.
I have a TC Electronics G Major and a Sansamp PSA-1.
What Id like advice on is this.
Where in the signal chain should I place the G Major and the PSA-1?
Should I:
a) Guitar ----- straight into the 002R to convert analag to digital then apply the G Major and PSA-1?
or
b) Guitar - Preamp --- G Major ----- 002R?
I just want to know if its better doing the converting from analog to digital with a "dry" signal first or apply the effects/preamp first then convert.
If I apply the affects afterwards, can someone please explain to me how I hook it up to the 002R eg. the preamp and the effects eg.effects loop in/out of the 002R etc etc.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi uncle_jerr!
Thank you so much for the reply.
If I take that advice, can you direct me on how I hook up my preamp?
For example, if I plug the guitar straight into the 002R (audio interface), then how do I then hook up my preamp?? Do I loop it somehow into the audio interface?
I really appreciate your response. Thank you.

Hi uncle_jerr!
Once again thank you!!!!
Okay.....I dont have a DI box.
And the PSA preamp I have does have an instrument in.
BUT.......if I did as you suggest, and used a DI box, and plug in as follows:
Guitar ---- DI Box ----- Preamp -----002
Would the DI Box give me a better overall sound...than if I didnt have one?
Ive never used a DI box before, but Im wondering if this is the reason some of my recordings have a lot of buzz, and whether a DI box might fix this problem.
Would it be a good way to go getting one do you think, and do a lot of people (including yourself) use one?
Thanks so much again uncle_jerr.

di
no problem.
Yes I use a di box, and every studio should have a few. But like I mentioned, you can use the instrument input on the preamp instead. DI boxes aren't made to alter the sound, only change impedence. But they will color the sound in some minor way simply because every circuit you go through slightly alters the harmonic content of the signal. Hopefully if it's a good DI, you won't hear any difference. But yeah, for now just go ahead and use the instrument input.
