Recording 8 track setup to computer

Hey im new, i am wanting to setup a studio in my garage, but im not sure what equipment i need.

I am wanting to record atleast 8 tracks simultenlsy. I want to record the 8 tracks and some how get the 8 tracks onto my computer. I have heard about using a mixer and a optical cord via a sound card.

Could anyone help me by telling me what specific equipment i can get and will need, also if anyone as already got a similar setup, could they post it

Also remember i have a very low budget. about £400-£600 or $700-$900.

I have all the basic stuff like mics and a computer with cubase sx but just need the actual hardware to record to.

Hope this made sense.

Thank you

Firpod

This puppy is in your price range and will do the job:

As you have cubase already you should be good to go.

You didn't mention your computer spec so you will need to check that out for compatibility with every option you look at.

breakout box

This will also do the job and is what I use to record 8 channels at once:

http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Delta1010-main.html

Has a rack mount breakout box with 8 1/4" ins and 8 1/4" outs each one having its own +4 -10 dBV switch.

How I use it is my Behringer UB-2442FX 24 channel board has direct outs for the first 8 channels. I run an 8 channel 1/4" snake from those 8 direct outs to the 8 ins on the rack mount box. The rack mount is connected the PC via a 25 pin cable that connects to the 1010's own sound card. Then you use your software to route the 8 inputs to whatever tracks you want them to be on.
Works pretty slick!

Mike

terratec producer series

I use a Terratec Phase 88 PCI device with breakout box that fits into a 5 1/2 inch slot in front of the PC or can sit off to the side-- also available in rackmount from with 1/4in jacks. I use it much the same way as Wolfy uses the 1010. 8 analog I/Os (RCA), digital I/O, MIDI. 24/96 audio. $300 US if you can actually find someone that sells it. I think I got mine from zzounds.com, but they don't offer it anymore icon_sad.gif . I just did a google and was disappointed that no one seems to have it. Shame, I think it's a wonderful device. You can cascade 3 or 4 of these into one machine when you're ready to upgrade, too.

Delta 1010

Is this what you're talking about?

http://www.gearblasters.com/directory/recording/Terratec_Phase_88.html

I forgot that you can cascade the Delta 1010 also, making 16, 24, 32, however many channels you have $500 a pop to spend on it, LOL.

Jerr, I see you're in IL - so am I - what part of the state are you in?

Yeah, that's the Phase 88, but as you see, musician's friend has actually dicontinued it. The specs can still be found on the terratec website, http://en.terratec.net, but they don't say anything about discontinuing the phase 88. So I dunno, maybe it's just not popular enough for the big online retailers? check ebay maybe?

--I live as far north as you can possibly get in IL, about a half-hour north of Rockford
