i find that rolling a HPF off sub harmonics ( at about 20Hz ) diminishes the unwanted muddy-ness of a kick, while boosting around 90-100 Hz will give you a nice thumping tone.

i checked into the AKG D112 and the Shure Beta 52 for the kick...and i'm still looking into tom/overhead mics.
