Top Kiwi reggae act Katchafire won best urban video for the animated ‘Colour
Me Life’ clip featuring a cartoon hedgehog at last night’s (30/08)
inaugural viewer voted Juice TV Music Video Awards.
The band’s debut album, ‘Revival’, recently went double platinum following on from three top 10 singles: ‘Get Away’, ‘Who You
With’ and platinum single ‘Giddyup’ for which Katchafire won
a Tui for highest selling single at the 2003 NZ Music Awards. ‘Giddyup’
was also the number one most played single on New Zealand urban radio, ahead
of all international releases, and was the 17th highest charting single of 2002.
Mai Music general manager Victor Stent says the band will release a new single
and video, ‘Seriously’, later this week and is currently in the
studio recording their second album which will be released before Christmas.
Katchafire will also return to Australia and New Caledonia before the end of
this year.
‘Colour Me Life’ director Ivan Slavov says the video was a collaborative
effort between himself and Victor Stent while he also worked side-by-side with
the animator, Tin-Tin. Slavov, who won three times at last night’s video
awards, says it’s great for his small crew – the Independent Film
Company of New Zealand – to be recognised for their work.
With two singer-songwriters, and several of the musicians in the eight-piece
band playing more than one instrument, Katchafire delivers a rich and heady
mixture of original pop-reggae tunes, plus an extraordinary catalogue of over
130 classic reggae songs.
